Guide to a Salad Making!

Recently I got a cooking book called “Quick Cook” by Cooking Lite! There are so many smart things and quick recipes shared that I have planned to try most of them and post them on my blog.

Little while ago my friend and I were discussing about how do I make my salads for dinner. She brought up few interesting observations that most of the ladies end up with cucumbers, lettuce, sprouts, onions and other heavy, crunchy veggies. Voooo!!! That’s a lethal combination. You cannot digest all of that in a single go!! It’s a killer with no taste! Well, here’s the post to your rescue in case you are falling in the above condition.

A road map for a composed salad by Cooking Lite – Well, I almost followed the same excluding cheese. Anyway here it is –
1.       2 cups Shredded Lettuce per person
It does not always have to be only iceberg lettuce, try to have varieties - Bibb and romaine, red leaf and baby oak leaf, spinach and radicchio.

2.       3 ounce of protein per plate
I personally prefer – salmon, skinless rotisserie chicken, and boiled egg whites.
3.       Add 1 cup of veggies and/or Fruits
You can go for peaches, strawberries, blue berries, baby spinach, shredded zucchini, fine carrots, nectarines, apples or pears.
4.       Give it some crunch
Best bets are Almonds, toasted nuts, pecans or walnuts and croutons.
5.       Get Cheesy

Until recently I never used cheese other than in baked penne. However, I think it’s pretty interesting to add cheese - blue cheese, Parmesan, cheddar, Gouda, fresh goat cheese, are few options. Not only it adds a flavour but a smooth texture too. I often use dried cranberries.
6.       Drizzle the dressing
I personally don’t prefer any dressing ESP from the market as sodium and other ingredients terrify me. However, this book has got some interesting homemade salad dressings which I should share with you sometime soon. Anyway go for a quick drizzle and try to find low sodium and less fat or cheesy dressing.

7.       Seasoning
Ooppss!! This is sure a learning. I never seasoned my salad I guess it’s time to. Several grinds of fresh black pepper.
Very well then here you go. Try your hands on salad making without any excuses. You will feed yourself fruits, greens and proteins. It’s brilliant combination to avoid high carb foods for dinners and your trials on reducing weight.

Have a great day!
