Best Foods to Boost your Metabolism

It would be very unfair to just mention the foods and encourage you to eat without analyzing its trueness. I asked myself that does these foods boost the metabolism for longer durations or shorter?

Thinking about it, made me bump into couple of sites and bit of research. In conclusion, these foods do spike your metabolism but for shorter durations. That means, if you are on diet for weight loss or looking for losing few pounds then you can involve few of these foods as snacks in order to spike your metabolism and burn few more calories.

This is not more about the only foods that you should consume in order to lose weight but also to make your diet healthy, fresh and green.

Green Tea: It contains healthy catechin that speeds up your brain and nervous system, causing your body to burn more calories.
My take on this: Green Tea is surely a good option for drinking it at snack times. It is a more potent antioxidant than black tea. It’s worth letting it in your diet.

Almonds: Almonds’ essential fatty acids help raise your body’s metabolism.
My take on this: In this post, I have already mentioned my intake of fatty acids. You should certainly have a little amount of fatty acids in your diet. So grab on these munchies and boost your metabolism while you need most.

Grapefruit & Apples: Like Grapefruit, Apple is a low-calorie snack is high in fiber, which your body must burn calories to break down. Plus, since apples help you stay full for longer, you’ll eat less.
My take on this: Fruits are anytime welcome in my diet - High fiber, rich in vitamins & minerals, full and healthy. Replacing carbs with fruits is always a better idea.

Greens like Spinach, Broccoli & Beans: Spinach & Broccoli contains an impressive pack of metabolism boosting nutrients – Calcium, Vitamin C, iron and antioxidants. Beans are rich in protein, no fat and filling.
My take on this: Of course Spinach is my favorite green. Though I am not great fan of Broccoli, this week I have started to incorporate it in my diet esp in high protein recipe like any chicken recipes. You can also toss them in any veggie salads or dishes. Beans, I have always seen boiled stack of beans along with carrots and potatoes as the side dish in UK.
Any dish that you order is mostly accompanied with the veggies mentioned above.  It seems pretty staple to Brits. However, I love eating them though just the boiled would not be an impressive take to Indians as we are the great lovers of Curry.  So, smiles on the faces people because Curry, Cinnamons and Jalapenos are also part of the list.

Curry, Cinnamons and Jalapenos: Zing of Cinnamon plays a crucial role to metabolize sugars more effectively and maintain steadier blood sugar levels. It also helps lower your cholesterol.  Capcaisin found in Jalapenos causes body to burn extra calories and speed up metabolism just like curry.
My take on this: I use Cinnamon only in lavish Indian curries or Biryanis’. Curry and Jalapenos do not work out well for me as my digestive system cannot take anything spicy that is more than mild. However, if you are wondering that you eat curry yet you put on weight then you got to think of it from a big picture.
The oil you use? Are you frying it too much? The side dishes that you use with the curry also matters. I prefer low fat greek yogurt along with curry for 2 reasons: 1. It helps my digestive system and cools down the spicy affect. 2. It’s a low fat yogurt – A better option.
Have a good day!

What’s in your Bathroom?

By now you must have known about me that I am more into Greens, Ayurveda and natural products. I was always a big fan of Body Shop products back in India. This spring I have decided to revamp my bathing products, bringing those natural scrubs and soaps back to habit (still wondering why I waited so long). Anyway, since that summer is just next door, it is the time to replace those heavy moisturizing cream to lighter ones and adding few scrubs in the box.

Considering the fact that “90% of the dust in your home is dead skin cells” – Yeah I was surprised too. We should be looking after our skin to get rid of those dead skin cells and allow our pores to breathe. How is this possible? By Exfoliating!

“Exfoliating the body not just the face”: That’s right! You make an appointment in a parlor for your monthly facials and you are relaxed that yes! I am doing a good job by taking care of the appearance. But are you really? It is the time to extend the exfoliation from face to body. Here’s a link that I highly recommend going through. It clearly explains tools to use and how to exfoliate your body  - a step by step procedure. Here it is!!

I did quite a lot of research before I bought any new habit in my bath room. Body scrubs, you will find a never ending list of scrubs. But “Spa Wisdom Africa Ximenia & Salt Scrub” topped the chart. After trying my hands on it - I am sure that it’s going to be good habit and green from side for this product.
Spa Wisdom Africa Ximenia & Salt Scrub:
It’s best for all skin types, particularly those with dry skin who need to exfoliate regularly.
How does it work: Community Trade organic beeswax moisturizes and conditions skin while acting as a barrier to help seal in moisture. Community Trade shea butter moisturizes and softens skin. Salt grains gently exfoliate skin. Ximenia, an oil extracted from the ximenia tree native to Africa, helps soften the skin Ain’t those words bliss to ears??  J

Do try your hands on this Scrub. Body Shop has got some nice offers to grab. So the price gets slashed too.
The next product that I highly recommend is
Vitamin E Moisture Mask of Body Shop:
“Sink some antioxidant Vitamin E into your skin. Bring skin back to optimum moisture level with this intensely hydrating mask”.  – ahh how better can this get! I surely needed something like this one as I feel very light on my skin, non-greasy and it gets better in sun. When I don’t have put up with those heavy moisturizers. The pricing is very close to that of a scrub but it’s worth it.
Couple of weeks ago, this is what I bought J a complete package of products that worth 200USD. The discounts made it better by getting us that entire package in half Price. Shea Shower Cream has always been my favorite. I am happy to get it back in my regular use. It also includes few Men products, I wanted my husband to try them and the results are quite positive J
MACA Root Shaving cream was a brilliant choice. A pinch of that cream does all the magic and lasts long of course. As mentioned on Body Shop: It’s Best if he wants to: Experience a closer shave with a rich, skin-softening cream that protects his skin from nicks, cuts and irritation.
How does it work: Peruvian maca root and creatine energize and help boost skin vitality. Community Trade Brazil nut oil and Community Trade sesame oil moisturize and soften skin. Community Trade aloe vera soothes and hydrates sensitive skin.
You can find all Men’ Skin Care Products here.
There are some interesting offers running in stores. It’s worth checking out once. Below was a good deal to get hands on during Mother’s Day Special - 3 deluxe body butter in reusable tin at 18 USD original price is 10USD each i.e 30 USD for a 3 body butter pack.

Now, with this experience I have officially fallen in love with the Body Shop products again.

Have a good day!

Healthy Bite: 13 - Veggie Pad/Phat Thai

Thai and Chinese cuisines are my husband’s favorite. So I often try to get my hands on these and learn more about them. This is my first hands on a Thai dish. Pad/Phat Thai recipe is a dish of stir-fried rice noodles with eggs, fish sauce, tamarind juice, red chili pepper, plus any combination of bean sprouts, shrimp, chicken, or tofu, garnished with crushed peanuts, coriander and lime. Variations: You can have numerus healthy variations - Baby corns, finely chopped Carrots, Bell Peppers, Firm Tofu, Broccoli, Shrimps and Chicken.

Considering all the ingredients for this dish together and dividing it by 4, it is of 240 Calories. However, when the same is ordered from restaurant, it can have 800 Calories that’s because of the typical larger servings, more of oil, seasonings including salt in order to make the food more appealing.
So, once I had eye on my husband ordering and loving it. I understood it was time for me to learn for his good health. Make him fall in love with the homemade one. That would also make me happier on curbing those extra 500ish calories J
Well then, here it is. It was too late for me to thaw chicken hence I made it a veggie recipe. It’s one of the simpler and quicker recipes to make.

You will need:

- Thin Thai-style Rice Noodles
-  2 Eggs – Optional
-  Finely chopped Veggies of your choice – I had cabbage, bean sprouts, celery, chillies, minced garlic and spring onions.
-  Sauce: ¾ Tbsp. of Tamarind Paste, Ranging from 2-3 Tbsp. of Fish sauce, Chili Sauce and brown sugar (as per your flavor)
- For garnishing - Cilantro, well fried peanuts and lime.
However, I opted to buy the ready-made sauce from the market as I am not great fan of tamarind and I was missing the same in my kitchen. However, if you are interested to make the sauce at home here’s the procedure:
Sauce:
To make the Pad Thai sauce, begin with Tamarind paste. Add ¼ cup of water until the paste dissolves well in the water. Followed by adding Fish sauce and red chili sauce depending how spicy you like and 2 ½ to 3Tbsp. of brown sugar to balance the sourness and tamarind paste.
Noodles:
Step1 – Soak the noodles – Get a pot of water boiling, remove it from heat and soak rice noodles, allow it to sit until you make other ingredients.
Step 2- Have a handful of peanuts fried and set aside.
Step 3 – Stir Fry all the veggies until brown (here you can also add well whisked eggs). The whole stir frying would make the eggs scrambled and well sorted. Also, check the noodles that the texture is soft yet little firmness persists.
Here's the pic of stir frying veggies. I know there's hardly any oil. I guess that's beauty of stir fry.

Step 4 – Once the veggies are well stir fried. Add the noodles and sauce. Here's how it looked!

Step 5 – Stir Fry noodles well and serve it hot. Garnish with fried peanuts, cilantro and lime.

Hope you liked it!
Enjoy!

Guide to a Salad Making!

Recently I got a cooking book called “Quick Cook” by Cooking Lite! There are so many smart things and quick recipes shared that I have planned to try most of them and post them on my blog.

Little while ago my friend and I were discussing about how do I make my salads for dinner. She brought up few interesting observations that most of the ladies end up with cucumbers, lettuce, sprouts, onions and other heavy, crunchy veggies. Voooo!!! That’s a lethal combination. You cannot digest all of that in a single go!! It’s a killer with no taste! Well, here’s the post to your rescue in case you are falling in the above condition.

A road map for a composed salad by Cooking Lite – Well, I almost followed the same excluding cheese. Anyway here it is –
1.       2 cups Shredded Lettuce per person
It does not always have to be only iceberg lettuce, try to have varieties - Bibb and romaine, red leaf and baby oak leaf, spinach and radicchio.

2.       3 ounce of protein per plate
I personally prefer – salmon, skinless rotisserie chicken, and boiled egg whites.
3.       Add 1 cup of veggies and/or Fruits
You can go for peaches, strawberries, blue berries, baby spinach, shredded zucchini, fine carrots, nectarines, apples or pears.
4.       Give it some crunch
Best bets are Almonds, toasted nuts, pecans or walnuts and croutons.
5.       Get Cheesy

Until recently I never used cheese other than in baked penne. However, I think it’s pretty interesting to add cheese - blue cheese, Parmesan, cheddar, Gouda, fresh goat cheese, are few options. Not only it adds a flavour but a smooth texture too. I often use dried cranberries.
6.       Drizzle the dressing
I personally don’t prefer any dressing ESP from the market as sodium and other ingredients terrify me. However, this book has got some interesting homemade salad dressings which I should share with you sometime soon. Anyway go for a quick drizzle and try to find low sodium and less fat or cheesy dressing.

7.       Seasoning
Ooppss!! This is sure a learning. I never seasoned my salad I guess it’s time to. Several grinds of fresh black pepper.
Very well then here you go. Try your hands on salad making without any excuses. You will feed yourself fruits, greens and proteins. It’s brilliant combination to avoid high carb foods for dinners and your trials on reducing weight.

Have a great day!

Accessories - can make a subtle neutral color dress to a fantastically classic. The look changes with a single piece on! I have never been a great fan of accessories. Well said and defined by my friends too. They are right to an extent, as I was great fan of accessories till 2008. But after that I suddenly lost interest in the junk (I know not a good choice of expression) until today and I surely say a BIG Hello to accessory again ESP when they can do no harm or itching business on my skin. Yes! Bib Necklaces are the wonderful pieces to be grabbed! That are worn over a tee or a shirt.

Here are the few assorted and my favorite pieces, look and have your take on it! Below are the latest collections of Amrita Singh – Designer Indian Jewelry.  I have been intending to buy the first piece and the beauty is they have sale running on their website for mother’s day special. The first piece after discount costs 200 USD. I would rather wait and keep my eye on other sites too. However, there is absolutely nothing wrong in admiring the trend, style and beauty of the pieces.

Dannijo: This is yet another classic designer jewelry that I am in love with. They are statement necklaces. You must look into the website here.

However, considering it’s mostly the chains and crystals ESP with the variety of beautiful colors. I absolutely couldn’t resist looking for DIY of Dannijo’s Necklace.

You can make your Rhinestone necklaces look like Dannijo’s in no time. Make your statement necklace now. Check out this link here, nail paints does the magic! I am hunting down a rhinestone and chain necklace for myself. Once I get mine I am surely carrying out this DIY.

Ayurveda Test

Greens, lots of water, fresh fruits, cotton clothes, organic food and love for nature – Define me and my interests. Then a question pops up in my mind – Why am I driven to these things. Why I prefer evening walks. Why do I like to visit natural beauty over man-made structures? Am I meant to be like this? Or is it what my mind, body and soul demands for?

But I did get my answers when I accidently bumped into a test called “Prakriti Test” – It’s a Ayurveda Body Test. Well, to begin with Ayurveda means - “A Knowledge for Life Long”. Ayurveda believes in 5 Elements: Earth, Water, Fire, Air & Sky and 3 Doshas – Called Vatha, Pitha & Kapha.

Ayurvedic Medicine is traditional medicine system native to India. Knowingly or unknowingly we follow lot of things that surrounds Ayurvedic practices.  It is in our (Indians) blood to look for home remedies for most the illness until absolutely necessary to visit Doctor as we hardly believe in having capsules/medicine for every other silly illness. Strange but true and why is that it is still practiced because it does yield better results. For example: If you look for anti-inflammation: Omega 3 Capsules helps reduce the inflammation i.e. fish oil capsules nothing but natural stuff and so does the Turmeric that is a part for Ginger family helps in reducing inflammation. Hence, they always opt to have little Turmeric in Milk for patients. It has the healing power!

Very well, my intention is to take a test and find out which category does you fall in?
Here’s the link for the Test:
The results were precise for me. It tells you When and what you need to balance, lists your Dietary and Lifestyle Recommendations too.
